Q: Why a skatepark?
A: There are currently no skateparks in Cobb
County. The closest public skatepark is more than 30 miles
away. Based on surveys by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers
Association,
4.6% of the total US Population are casual
skateboarders and 16 % of youth (6-24) are skateboarders.
Based on census Data for Cobb County, there are 107,000 kids
enrolled in public schools and the estimated 12,000-16,000
skateboarders in the area that have no safe, legal or
controlled space to practice. As a result, skateboarders
are often seen practicing their sport in the street and on
private property such as local shopping centers and
abandoned lots. Police often have to patrol these areas and
keep the kids off of the property. This contributes to an
adversarial relationship with local law enforcement and area
youth.
Q: When's the park going to be built?
A: That all depends on funding, support and constuction
timelines. We're hoping to break ground in 2008.
Q: Who is designing the park?
A: Newline skateparks will be developing the designs for the
park?
Q:Who are you guys?
A: We're a handfull of local skaters and concerned citizens
giving up our free time to help make sure this skatepark is
done right. We work closely with the Mayor, City Council and
local Parks and Recreations department on the planning of
this park. We spend our weekends and late nights and give
our time and money to make sure the park is something that
we can all be proud of. If you're interested in joining us
please send us a message.
Q: How can I help?
A: Get involved NOW. Contact
Adam. We need volunteers and smart people to help work
fundraisers, develop ideas and capitalize on the momentum
this project has. You'll get a first-hand look at how the
skatepark development process works and a say in how the
park is designed, funded and managed. Plus you'll get that
warm fuzzy feeling knowing that you're contributing to the
greater good. If you're not involved you have no room to
complain when the park is finished. Monthly meetings are
open to the public. Show up. Be heard. Get involved.
Q: Where's the park going to be?
A: It'll be in the Swift Cantrell park just outside of
downtown Kennesaw
Q: How is the park being paid for?
A:The park is being funded by a combination of grassroots
fundraising (that's us), corporate sponsorship and financial
support of local municipalities.
Q: Who is building the park?
A: The comitee has yet to make a recommendation about the
contruction of the park
Q: Is the park going to be free to skate?
A: It will be the comittee's recommendation that the park be
a free-to-skate park. Ultimately, that decision is up to the
city. The committee feels that an entrance fee is counter
productive to the goals of the park.
